PIE Grant Highlights 2012-2013 School Year

Digital Photography

The McMurray Photography program was brought into the digital age with the purchase of iPads, digital point and shoot cameras, POGO instant digital printers, and zinc POGO printer paper. Students in middle school two-dimensional and three-dimension art classes can also use this new digital photography equipment.

 Learning Through Board Games

A variety of high quality games were purchased for the new Board Game elective and Humanities classes at McMurray. These games provide a variety of benefits including an increase in social and communication skills, teaching students to how to include and welcome others, be a good sport, and how to build friendships and connections. Using these games in the classroom allows students to interact with and get to know students they might not usually spend time with as well as teaching and practicing actual skills in math, language, strategy, history, etc.

Strength Training in Physical Education Classes

A classroom set of weighted Fitness Bars and storage rack will be shared by McMurray High School and Vashon High School. Since learning and practicing good form and technique is critical, this fitness tool is designed to facilitate proper movement along with the benefit of conditioning. The developing strength training component of the physical education program hopes to benefit students in their play, competition and recreational activities as well as contributing to life long benefits and overall health.

Trikes & Helmets for Preschool

Preschool and kindergarten students now have ten tricycles and safety helmets to use at outdoor playtime.  These are valuable tools to enhance neuro-motor development in all children and especially for the special needs students. Biking helps the whole body learn to move in sync, encouraging the brain to talk to the body. All participants increase stamina, coordination, muscle development and safety awareness.  Of course it is also fun!

 Shakespeare DVDs

Vashon High School students in all levels of required English classes and electives can see Shakespeare come to life through a set of filmed versions of his plays. Documentary films about Shakespeare’s life, the Globe theatre, Elizabethan history and culture will further expose students to this genius’ life and times.

 High School Theater Arts Microphones

PIE’s continuing support of the theatre department over the years has allowed them to buy the beginnings of an exceptional sound system. This year the purchase of head set microphones will greatly improve the sound quality of all productions and allow the theatre arts program to spend less money on rentals and more money for royalties, costumes, props and set construction.

Grant Highlights 2011-2012 School Year

Exploring and Learning from our Island Forests

The Chautauqua 3rd grade classes visited six different island forests, accompanied by environmental experts, to enhance their new science curriculum and build stewardship and a love of nature.

Understanding Civic Involvement: Our Rights and Responsibilities

8th graders from McMurray traveled to Olympia to tour the legislative offices, observe the legislative session and visit with their state representatives.

Girls STEM

McMurray Middle School girls attended the Expanding Your Horizons STEM conference. This conference serves to foster and encourage female students’ interest and motivation to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

“Twice Told Tales”

A collection of Playaway audio books was purchased for the Chautauqua Library. This technology allows students with special needs, reluctant readers, English learners, and those students who want to understand more complex literature to read along with the printed text while hearing the audio component.

Power for Demo Sawmill

This power plant is the last link necessary to allow the Vashon High School Woodworking program to set up a small band sawmill to process donated logs. The mill will produce material for the woodworking program and other school uses such as props for the Theater Arts.

Vashon Artists in Schools (VAIS)

Vashon Artists in Schools, through Vashon Allied Arts, funded teacher-initiated classroom-based residency projects to enrich and extend the existing curriculum and student learning through an arts medium and language. Projects this year included Cantaremos De Nuevo at VHS, Math in a Basket at McMurray, and Bringing Birds to Life, at Chautauqua, among many more.

VAIS—A Canvas of Food

Giant paintings of luscious fruits and vegetables were created by master artist Kristen Reitz Green and 71 multi-age students for display in the Chautauqua Multi-Purpose Room. This art work is an extension of the celebrated garden that PIE has financially supported since its inception.

Janet Baron Honorary Grant

The PIE Board will honor our beloved late President, Janet Baron, by granting the NXT Robotics upgrade to the 5th grade team. Janet was a vital proponent of the robotics program since the project was first funded by PIE twelve years ago. Even in her retirement she continued to be an active Robotics consultant and instructor at Chautauqua.

Thank you, again, for supporting VAIS this year — I cannot underline enough how unique our area arts program was in being able to pivot during the pandemic. Definitely a testament to some determined classroom teachers, ultra-creative teaching artists, a supportive district and the vital funding we received for materials to go to students in as equitable a manner as we could.
